When Is Inpatient Behavioral Hospital Care Needed?

Inpatient behavioral health care for children and adolescents aged 5-17 is needed when they are experiencing severe mental health issues that significantly impair their ability to function at home, school, or in the community.  This level of care is often required when a child is a danger to themselves or others, experiencing severe symptoms like psychosis or self-harm, or when outpatient treatment is no longer effective.

Severe Symptoms and Risk:

  • Suicidal thoughts or actions: Expressing a desire to die, making suicide attempts, or engaging in self-harm behaviors like cutting or burning.
  • Extreme aggression or violence: Harming others, damaging property, or experiencing uncontrollable anger.
  • Psychosis: Experiencing hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there) or paranoia (believing others are trying to harm them).
  • Self-harming behaviors: Cutting, burning, or other forms of self-inflicted injuries.
  • Inability to care for themselves: Difficulty with basic self-care tasks due to overwhelming symptoms.

Impact on Functioning:

  • Persistent emotional distress: Experiencing prolonged periods of sadness, anxiety, or irritability that interfere with daily life.
  • Inability to function effectively in school: Significant academic problems, behavioral issues in the classroom, or refusal to attend school.
  • Severe mood swings: Rapid shifts in mood that disrupt relationships and daily activities.
  • Withdrawal from family and friends: Significant isolation and lack of engagement with loved ones.
  • Drastic changes in behavior: Unexplained shifts in personality, interests, or behavior patterns.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Programs

In an effort to further support our mission of improving children's lives, we have launched Carrus Care, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) available for children ages 8-17.

Often referred to as “Day Treatment”, this Monday through Friday, 6-8 week program is ideal for children who need a dedicated team working to teach them skills to maintain their own mental health while balancing school stressors, home stressors, friendships, and relationships.

Children will receive a full day of education and treatment guided by a Licensed Psychiatrist and Therapist and then will return home in the evening to apply what they have learned. The following day, the child will be encouraged to share with their Therapist how the application of their new skills worked for them.

This allows for real time feedback and adjustments to their personalized treatment plan ensuring the child's overall success. PHP/IOP is often a great transition for children when stepping down from an inpatient level of care or can also be used for children stepping up to a higher level of care than traditional counseling and psychiatry.

Carrus Care is proud to offer a one-of-a-kind 'Faith Based Program' and a 'Care Program' to ensure comfort and success for all children. It is our hope that the care and treatment children receive while at Carrus will help catapult them into success for the rest of their lives. We understand that true outcomes lie in the effectiveness of our programs and the success of our children.
